Sugar free mojito

[the_ad id=”615″]

Mojito is a typical alcoholic drink from Latin America, precisely from Cuba. It is considered a highball because, like rum and cola and seven and seven, the alcoholic base spirit is mixed with a larger portion of non-alcoholic ingredients. In fact, in addition to white rum, the mojito consists of soda water, lime juice, sugar, and spearmint. In our recipe, we used a sweetener instead of sugar and the taste was just as good!

We made our first sugar free mojito for a Friday evening drink because we were so excited about using our own spearmint that we are cultivating on our balcony! The result was extraordinary: it is one of the best mojitos we had ever tasted and we can’t wait to drink it again and again.

The history of mojito

Cuba is the birthplace of this drink and precisely, Havana. Even though we have a clear location, the real origin of the drink is uncertain.

One current of thought states that local South American indigenous people used a primitive version of mojito to heal illnesses, as they had remedies to cure tropical illnesses. The ingredients were burning water (a crude form of rum), lime, sugarcane juice, and mint.

A second theory supports the idea that African slaves, that had to work in the sugar cane fields in Cuba, were important in the origin of the famous drink. To support this, there is the fact that the original drink did not contain lime juice, but instead Guarapo, a sugar cane juice very popular among the slaves.

These two are not the only two theories about the origin of one of the best and well-known cocktails in the world. Also, the amount of variations is high and really every taste can be satisfied.

Making sugar free mojito

To make a sugar free mojito, you follow the same steps as for making a regular mojito. You need to gently crush the mint leaves to release the oils that release the great spearmint smell and taste. You will add some lime into the mix and then dilute the sweetener. The great thing about sweeteners is that you usually add much less than sugar and they dilute easily, so you will have a well-mixed and sweet drink in no time.

We used a type of sweetener that is in tablet form. One tablet replaced one teaspoon (5ml of sugar). Remember to follow the instructions on the sweetener that you use to add the right amount of it, as their sweetness can vary.
